Hobo Dinner

An easy camping recipe to make on the grill or the campfire. I cooked this when I was a scout almost 50 years ago and it is delicious.

INGREDIENTS:
4 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced
1/2 medium onion, sliced or diced, as desired
1 lb ground chuck
1/4 cup water
salt and pepper to taste
aluminum foil, in 8 inch lengths

PREPARATION:

  • Add water to ground beef and mix well.
  • Add potatoes, onion and seasoning. Mix well.
  • Separate into 3-4 servings.
  • Wrap in double-thickness aluminum foil.
  • Place seam side up on medium hot grill for 40 minutes, rotating periodically.

  • Do not flip. Open carefully. Serve with ketchup.
  • Servings: 3 - 4 Preparation time: 1 hour

For three to four scouts

  • 1 lb ground chuck
  • 4 medium potatoes
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 heavy duty roll of aluminum foil
  • Salt
  • Pepper

For eight scouts

  • 2 lb ground chuck
  • 8 medium potatoes
  • 2 small onion
  • 1 heavy duty roll of aluminum foil
  • Salt
  • Pepper

For Twelve scouts

  • 3 lb ground chuck
  • 12 medium potatoes
  • 3 small onion
  • 1 heavy dutyl roll of aluminum foil
  • Salt
